NOTICE OF CANVASS CANCELLATION
 
The Smyth County Republican Canvass, scheduled for Saturday, June 5, has been CANCELLED due to there being no contested offices.
 
The purpose of the canvass was to nominate Republican candidates for the Smyth County Board of Supervisors in the Saltville, Chilhowie, and Royal Oak election districts to be voted upon in the November 2, 2021 General Election.
 
As of the filing deadline of 5:00pm on May 21, the following candidates had filed for a nomination:
  • Chilhowie District:  Michael Lee Sturgill
  • Royal Oak District:  Samuel Courtney Widener

These filings have been examined and the candidates have been determined to be qualified to seek the nomination.  Michael Lee Sturgill will be the Republican nominee in the Chilhowie District and Samuel Courtney Widener will be the Republican nominee in the Royal Oak District.

No candidate filed for the nomination in the Saltville District.  Pursuant to the authority granted by the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party of Virginia and applicable law, the Smyth County Republican Committee reserves the right to make a nomination for the Smyth County Board of Supervisors in the Saltville District.  A nomination can be made up until 7:00pm on June 8.

As Chairman of the Smyth County Republican Committee, and pursuant to the Plan of Organization and as recommended and directed by the Committee, I, Adam L. Tolbert, do hereby issue this call for a Party Canvass(“party-run primary”) to be held at the Adwolfe Volunteer Fire Department, 107 Thomas Bridge Road, Marion, VA 24354(or its alternate site),beginning at 10:00AM local time and ending at 2:00PM local time on Saturday, June 5, 2021for the following purposes:

1)Nominating Republican candidates for the Smyth County Board of Supervisors to be voted upon in the November 2, 2021General Election in the Saltville, Chilhowie, and Royal Oak election districts.

OFFICIAL Call: Electing Delegates to the 2021 RPV State Convention

As Chairman of the Smyth County Republican Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia, and pursuant to the Plan of Organization and as recommended by the Committee, I, Adam L. Tolbert, do hereby issue this call to elect delegates to the May 8, 2021 State Convention at which candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General will be selected between 9 am and 4 pm.  Smyth County Delegates will vote at the Wytheville Meeting Center, 333 Community Blvd., Wytheville, VA

Those wishing to serve as delegates to the State Convention shall file the form available online at www.smythgop.org, www.va9gop.org, or www.virginia.gop, which must be received no later than 5:00pm on Saturday, April 17, 2021 (postmarks do not govern, actual receipt required by deadline).

38th Senate District Party Canvass Information

A Party Canvass will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 1:00pm until 7:00 pm to nominate a Republican candidate for Member of the Senate of Virginia from the 38th District to be voted upon in the Special Election to be held on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.

The Smyth County designated party canvass location will be:

Saltville Town Hall
217 Palmer Ave.
Saltville, VA.

Registered voters of the Saltville or Rich Valley voting precincts of Smyth County may appear at anytime during the hours of the canvass and offer to vote. The Saltville and Rich Valley precincts are the only voting precincts of Smyth County in the 38th Senate District. Each voter must present a form of photo ID and orally state or sign a pledge of support for Republican candidates, as may be required.

Mass Meeting

of the Smyth County Republican Committee

of the Republican Party of Virginia

As Chairman of the Smyth County Republican Committee, and pursuant to the Plan of Organization and as recommended and directed by the Committee, I, Adam L. Tolbert, do hereby issue this call for a Mass Meeting to be held at the WCC Summit Center, Wayne C. Henderson School of Appalachian Arts (2nd Floor), 203 N. Church Street, Marion, VA, 24354, starting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020 (if mass meeting is cancelled due to inclement weather or other reason, alternate date will be Monday, March 23, 2020), for the following purposes:

  • Electing a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, and members of the Smyth County Republican Committee;
  • Electing up to 315 Delegates and an equal number of Alternates to the Republican Party of Virginia State Convention, to be held on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2, 2020, at Liberty University, Vines Center, 1971 University Blvd., Lynchburg, VA 24515, or its alternate site, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on May 1 for the purposes of:
  1. electing a State Chairman;
  2. electing 12 At-Large Delegates (“National Delegates”) and 12 At-Large Alternate Delegates (“National Alternates”) to the Republican National Convention to be held on August 24-27, 2020, at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC (or its alternate site) (the “National Convention”);
  3. nominating two (2) Electors At-Large to serve in the 2020 Electoral College;
  4. nominating a National Committeeman and National Committeewoman; and
  5. for the transaction of other business as may properly come before the Convention.

Each unit is entitled to one (1) Delegate Vote per 250 Republican votes cast for Governor and President at their last election, so that Smyth County is entitled to 63 Delegate Votes;

  • Electing up to 315 Delegates and an equal number of Alternates to the Ninth Congressional District Republican Convention, to be held on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at George Wythe High School, #1 Maroon Way, Wytheville, VA 24382, or its alternate site, beginning at 10:00 a.m. (with registration opening at 8:00 a.m.) for the purposes of:
  1. electing a District Chairman of the Ninth Congressional District Republican Committee;
  2. electing 3 members to the State Central Committee;
  3. electing 3 delegates and 3 alternate delegates to the 2020 Republican National Convention;
  4. nominating 1 elector to serve in the 2020 Electoral College; and
  5. for the transaction of other business as may properly come before the Convention.

Each unit is entitled to one (1) Delegate Vote per 250 Republican votes cast for Governor and President at their last election, so that Smyth County is entitled to 63 Delegate Votes;

  • And, for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the meeting.

NOTICE OF CANVASS CANCELLATION
The Smyth County Republican Canvass, scheduled for Saturday, January 11, has been CANCELLED.
The purpose of the canvass was to nominate a Republican candidate for the Special Election to be held on July 14 for Board of Supervisors in the Chilhowie District.
As of the filing deadline of 5:00pm on January 3, no candidates had filed for the nomination.
Pursuant to the authority granted by the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party of Virginia and applicable law, the Smyth County Republican Committee reserves the right to make a nomination for this office at a future date.  A nomination can be made up until 5:00pm on May 15.
The Smyth County Republican Committee will meet for its next scheduled regular meeting on Monday, January 27 at 7:00pm at The Summit Center at the Wayne C. Henderson School of Appalachian Arts, 203 N. Church Street, 2nd Floor, in Marion.

Lee Highway, Chilhowie, Virginia (or its alternate site), beginning at 10:00AM local time and ending at 2:00PM local time on Saturday, January 11, 2020 for the following purposes:

  • Nominating a Republican candidate for the Smyth County Board of Supervisors, Chilhowie District, to be voted upon in the July 14, 2020 Special Election.

Results of 2019 Smyth County Republican Party Canvass

A canvass (party-run primary election) to determine the Republican nominee for Board of Supervisors in the Rye Valley District was held at the Marion Branch of the Smyth County Public Library on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 10:00am-2:00pm. A total of 113 registered voters of the Rye Valley District voted in the canvass.

Lori Hester Deel received the most votes and will be the Republican nominee for the Rye Valley District in the General Election on November 5, 2019 for the Smyth County Board of Supervisors.

The results were as follows:
Lori Hester Deel – 73 votes
Richard K. (Rick) Blevins – 39 votes

One ballot was not counted due to the ballot being an over-vote.

The Smyth County Republican Committee wishes to thank the candidates, all those who voted in the canvass, and the canvass volunteers who helped make the event a success.

Notice of Nominees & Canvass Candidates

The following persons have been officially nominated as the Republican candidates for the Smyth County General Election on November 5, 2019 as they were the only candidates who filed by the May 17, 2019 filing deadline and were found qualified for the office and nomination indicated.

Sheriff: Kevin J. Testerman
Board of Supervisors, North Fork District: Charles P. (Phil) Stevenson (incumbent)
Board of Supervisors, Park District: Kristopher S. Ratliff

The following persons filed by the May 17, 2019 filing deadline and were found qualified for the office and nomination indicated.  Due to more than one candidate filing, a party canvass (“party-run primary”) will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm to decide the Republican nominee at the Smyth County Public Library-Marion Branch (DC Miller Law Office Building Meeting Room, beside rear parking lot of library).  Any person in line at 2:00pm will be permitted to offer to vote. 

Board of Supervisors, Rye Valley District:
Richard K. (Rick) Blevins (incumbent)

A party canvass is like a primary election, except it is run by the Republican Party at an established central polling place.  During the hours the canvass is being held, those who appear with proper photo ID, sign the pledge to support Republican candidates, and are found to be properly registered voters are given a paper ballot to vote and deposit into a ballot box.  The voter will then leave after casting their ballot.  At the end of the canvass, the ballot box is opened and the results are tallied on site.  The person with the most votes for a particular office is the party’s nominee. 

Only registered voters of the Rye Valley election district may vote at the canvass to decide this contested nomination. 

Pursuant to the authority granted by the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party of Virginia and applicable law, the Smyth County Republican Committee reserves the right to make further nominations for the offices where no candidate has been nominated. These offices are: Commonwealth’s Attorney, Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, and Board of Supervisors (Atkins District). Nominations for these offices can be made up until 7:00pm on June 11th if a qualified candidate expresses interest and is approved by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the Smyth County Republican Committee.

Any further nominations made will be announced at a later date.
