Delegate Morgan Griffith, Majority Leader of the Virginia House of Delegates, was nominated today at the 9th District Republican Convention in Wythe County for the 9th Congressional District seat in the November General Election.

Ninth District Republicans gathered today in a near capacity crowd at Ft. Chiswell High School in Wythe County and selected Morgan Griffith to be their nominee in the November General Election for Congress in the Ninth District of Virginia.
Griffith won the first ballot taken securing over the 50% mark needed to be the nominee. Dave Moore finished in second place and Adam Light finished in third place. Following balloting, Moore made a motion, seconded by Light to nominate Griffith by acclamation, which carried. William Carr withdrew his candidacy prior to balloting beginning. Other candidates for the nomination were Jessee Ring and Brandon Roop.
Griffith has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 1994. He represents the city of Salem and portions of Roanoke County. Additionally, Griffith is currently the Majority Leader, having served in this post since 2000.
Griffith is a member of the House Courts of Justice and Militia, Police and Public Safety Committees, and serves as Vice Chairman of the Rules Committee. He is also a member of the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission and serves as Chairman of the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council.
Griffith is a graduate of Emory & Henry College and the Washington & Lee University School of Law.
Additionally, Ninth District Republican Chair Michelle Jenkins was re-elected to a second two year term. She was unopposed. Jenkins is an attorney in Scott County.

The second and final debate, sponsored by the UVa-Wise College Republicans and the Wise County Republican Committee will be held at UVa-Wise on Tuesday, May 18 at 6:30PM. This will be a chance to see all the Republican candidates for the Congressional Nomination debate.
The debate will be held on the UVa-Wise campus.

At a meeting on Sunday, January 24, the 9th District Republican Committee called for a Convention to be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Ft. Chiswell High School in Max Meadows, Virginia to nominate a Republican Congressional candidate, to elect a district chairman, and for other business that may come before the convention.
